Show J,.* L. ]-¦:*-.->•-• 415 z des Oneida-Stammes enthalten. Sie wohnen auch noch gegenwärtig in wieser Gegend, haben aber einen Theil ihres Landes an die Vereinten Staaten verkauft. Unter den verschiedenen Stämmen der sechs Nationen waren sie der einzige, Qer in den früheren Kriegen den Americanern treu blieb. Von Oneida aus erreicht man bald Verona, ein kleines Dorf mit einer Fensterscheiben -Fabrik, südlich vom Oueida-TSee, wohin man von hier jetzt einen Canal anlegen wollte. Um 2 Uhr befanden wir uns in dem kleinen Dorfe New-London, la einer stark mit Hemlock bewachsenen und gemischten Waldgegend, wo sich ne-en dem Cauale waldige Sümpfe und einzelne Wohnungen zeigen. Ueberall gefönt man hier Holzproducte, als Bretter, Scheitholz, Bauholz und dergleichen und Verschifft dasselbe auf flachen Canalböten. Fünf Meilen von N. London erreicht ffian Home, etwas vom Canale entfernt, einen bedeutenden Ort, der aus der Ferne s°hon 5 Kirchen zeigt. Rund umher ist eine weite ebene Gegend, durch welche er Mohawk fliesst; der Horizont ist vom Wald begrenzt. Bei Rome soll man Oc& die Ueberreste des alten Fortes Stanvix sehen. Der Caual durchschneidet nun as Dorf Oriskany am Oriskauy - Creek, welches ehemals einer der Hauptwohn-Pätze der Oueida-Nation war; dann folgt eine Wiesengegend, welche mit freund-lcaen Wohnungen und schönen Wäldern, Gebüschen von Sambucus und Rhus, und euschuppeu mit beweglichem Dache wie in Holland abwechselt. Bei dem heiter-11 Sonnenscheine erreichten wir gegen 6 Uhr Abends Whitestown, einen netten allrbaften Ort am linken Canalufer, von der Familie Whi(e ursprünglich angelegt, eJche hier zuerst sich niederliess. Ein gewisser Henry White befand sich an Serem Boote, uach dessen Grossvater, als ersten Ansiedler dieser Ort seinen Na-6u erhielt. Dort existirt noch die erste Scheune, welche in dieser Gegend erbaut Ur^e- Zur Rechten des Canals sieht man hier die grosse Baumwollen-Manufactur s Herrn Marshai zu New-York, welche ein ganzes Dorf bildet, noch zwei ere ähnliche Werke liegen in der Nähe; allein an dem in den Mohawk fallen-1 Sacquit- Creek zählt man wohl uoch zwölf Baumwollen-Mauufacturen.
