Volney*) drückt sich sehr richtig über le Ansicht dieser grossen WTaldniederung aus, wenn er sie „une veritable mer de °*ets, parsemees de quelques fermes et villäges et des nappes d'eaux des lacs Iro- quois« nennt. Ich fuhr vor die mit Indianern angefüllte Kirche, in welcher sich der Geistliche schon auf der Kanzel befand. Er predigte in englischer Sprache, da er die der uscaroras noch nicht verstand; es befand sich neben ihm der Schullehrer, welcher die Worte jedesmal verdolmetschte. Als die Predigt vollendet und ein Gebet abge-esen war, wobei alle Indianer sitzen blieben, begann der Dolmetscher vorzusingen Un<i die Versammlung, in welcher sich nur 2 bis 4 Weisse befanden, sang in ei-lleoi sehr wohl moderirten Tone, die Männer meist eine zweite Stimme. Der Geisf-l^, ein junger Mann, der noch nicht lange an dieser Pfarrei stand, gab mir ei-Nachrichten über seine Gemeinde, die jetzt etwa aus 300 Seelen besteht, anderer Theil der Tuscaroras ist wie ich glaube, am Grand-River angesiedelt. ar die wenigsten von ihnen reden englisch, sie sind Presbiterians, und leben gens wie die Senecas, denen sie auch im Aeusseren gleichen, so wie ihre Prache dieselbe ist**)- Ich fand bei diesen Leuten schon weniger Originalität ä bei den Senecas zu Buffaloe; ihre Züge, Farbe und Haare schienen schon mehr Urch Vermischung mit den Weissen gelitten zu haben, doch sah man noch manche arac(eristische Physiognomie, besonders unter dem weiblichen Gescblechte. Sie * n(* von mittlerer Grosse und ihr Anzug ist der der Senecas bei Buffaloe. Diese ^aner waren zur Zeit des americanischen Krieges mit den Engländern alliirt.
