Show M ' S94 Handel ist sehr bedeutend durch die Verbindung der grossen Seen mit dem Ohio und Missisippi. Hier sind eine Menge von Canalböten vereint, so wie die zwei-mastigen Schooner (Skuuer), welche den See beschiffen. Täglich laufen mehre grosse, gut eingerichtete Dampfschiffe aus und ein, die gewöhnlich mit Passagiereu angefüllt sind. Der Cayahöga fliesst durch den unteren oder niederen Theil QeS Ortes. Man hat seine Mündung an beiden Seiten mit Holz eingefasst, und »nl rechten Ufer mit einem langen Hafendamme versehen, au dessen Spitze ein Leucfl'"' thurm steht; ein zweiter ist etwas rechts auf der Uferhöhe erbaut. Zur Rechten in weiter Entfernung sieht man die Küste sich in der duftigen Ferne verlieren> und zur Linken verschwindet sie näher mit dunklen Wäldern. Am Ufer des &eeä bei Cleveland wächst im Sande der breitblätterige Asclepias, in den SumpfsteUeB am Flusse eine gelbblühende Seerose und einige andere Pflanzen. Im Rohre bie" ten sich eine Menge Blackbirds auf, und schwärzliche Meerschwalben flogen ü^er dem See. Wir fanden zu Cleveland sehr viele Deutsche, besonders sehr viele neu ange* kommene Auswanderer, auch einen jungen gefälligen Landsmann, den ich schoß J Pittsburg gesehen, und der hier ein gutes Unterkommen in einer Handlung gefUI)' den hatte. Mehre Dampfschiffe liefen ein und aus, welche nach Detroit bestim waren, doch endlich erschien der Oliver Newberry, dessen Bestimmung ß°"a war, und ich benutzte diese Gelegenheit sogleich, um uns für diesen Ort eiflr schiffen. Um 12 Uhr Mittags verliessen wir Cleveland. So wie man die Mündung des Cayahöga verlassen hat, erblickt man frel endlosen Spiegel des Erie-Sees mit seinen prächtig blau grünen Flutlien, "*v wie bei allen diesen grosseii cauadischen Landseen, vollkommen die Schweizer-Gewässer haben. Das dunkelbraune Wasser des Cayahöga schneidet bei seinem Eintritte scharf und auf eine schöne Art von dem des Sees aD steuerte unfern des südlichen Ufers hin, wo man einen schönen Rückblick »u Stadt Cleveland hatte. Das herrlichste Wetter begünstigte unsere Fahrt, bei e -, |
