Show Dürf-:berle* 376 schon sehr lange hier lebt und diese Gegend vollkommen kennt, war leider ger* unpässlich. Er interessirt sich für die Wissenschaften und durch seine MitwirkuD» ist hier eine Lesebibliothek zu Stande gekommen, die bis jetzt erst im Entste ist und etwa 1500 Bände zählt. Alljährlich werden Bücher angeschafft und w besitzt schon manche werthvolle Werke. Herr Bad ölet kaufte auch den schoß wohl erhaltenen Unterkiefer eines Mastodon, der im White-River gefunden, u in der Bibliothek niedergelegt wurde; Lesueur hat ihn gezeichnet. Ein anü interessanter Mann lebt hier noch vergessen und in grosser Dürftigkeit, ein ser Colonel Vigo, der den Americanern bei der Eroberung von Vincennes tige Dienste leistete. Man machte ihn zwar zum Obersten, lässt ihn aber in tigkeit darben. Bei unseren Excursionen in der Nähe des Fleckens fanden wir manc interessante Pflanzen, u. a. auch Bartsia coccinea und die Baptisia alba mit i schönen weissen Blumen, Crataegus Crus-Galli, der in den niederen vom abgebissenen Gebüschen des Rubus trivialis häufig als isolirter Kugelbaum ^äc eben so die Gebüsche des Sambucus u. a. Arten. Herr Bodmer nahm von Höhe des Warriors-Hills eine Ansicht von Vincennes auf, während Herr LesU die indianischen Hügel besuchte, deren mehre hier in der Ebene liegen, und ehe die französischen Ansiedler Mameloas nennen. Man hat früher einmal solchen Hügel geöffnet und sich durch eine an der Seite befindliche Wo hinein gearbeitet, aber nichts weiter zu Tage gefördert, als weissen Thon; Zweifel hat man indessen nicht gehörig nachgesucht. Den oberen Theil der Hüge filw** Lesueur gänzlich mit der Rudbeckia purpurea bewachsen. Blackbirds wäre häufig, und die Geier zahlreich um einige todte Thiere versammelt. Man Herrn Lesueur eine kleine Schildkröte, welche er für eine besondere pP hielt, die ich aber nur für die gemeine Emys pieta ansehen konnte. A -cß^ " Am 13.
