Show 373 Wähnten Gewächse des Sandbodens und der Prairies von St. Louis von neuem auf, Wozu noch einige andere kommen: eine feuerfarbige Lilie (Lilium Catesbaei), der Sfossblumige Frauenschuh (Cypripedium spectabile), eine Art der Yucca und mehre aödere. Die stumpflappige Eiche bildet sogleich wieder schattige Stangenwal- au«gen, mit ihrem dicken, dunkel grünen Laube, dichter Krone und rauher Rinde. er Weg führte ununterbrochen durch solchen Wald und war noch neu und roh; denQ die alten Stöcke der abgehauenen Eichen standen noch darin, welche dem ^agen heftige Stösse gaben. Der alte bessere Weg führt etwas um und man hatte 016 Absicht, diesen neuen kürzeren bald gänzlich fahrbar zu machen. Unter den erWähnten Eichen stand ein schöner Gras- und Pflanzenwuchs, wo ich mit Hülfe es Herrn Lesueur mein Herbarium vermehrte. Es ist hier zu bemerken, dass 10 dem Sandboden die Gewächse sämmtlich in der Blüthe standen, während sie in em schwarzen fruchtbaren Waldboden durchgehends ohne Blüthen waren. Die c«önen Blumen des Lilium Catesbaei, deren an der Wurzel schmale Petalen da- "°st schwarz gefleckt sind, so wie die grossen weiss und violetten Blüthen des yptipedium spectabile, waren eine grosse Zierde der Vegetation*). Das Rebhuhn erdix virginiana) und mehre Arten von Schmetterlingen waren hier sehr häufig. Wenn man die etwas hügelige Gegend des White-River verlassen hat, lr(* das Land immer ebener und man tritt endlich aus dem Walde in die grüne Jbene des Wabasch, in welcher Vincennes 13 Meilen vom White-River liegt. In eser Ebene prädominiren zwei Eicharten, die eben erwähnte mit stumpflappigen eine andere mit schmalen oder weidenartigen Blättern QQ. imbricaria?), eben Wie bei St. Louis gemischt. Die letztere konnte wegen des Mangels der ^chte nicht mit Gewissheit bestimmt werden.
