Show 349 nWesenden Otos und Missouris wollten heute noch mit ihrer beliebten Ladung von isky zu ihren Dörfern jenseit und aufwärts am Missouri zurückkehren, und "sehten deshalb von uns übergesetzt zu seyn, welches aber nicht geschah. Herr dm er zeichnete in meinem Boote einen jungen kräftigen Missouri. Dieser Stamm p ehemals zahlreich und mächtig, verlor aber durch eine von den Sacs, Foxes Osagen ihnen beigebrachte Niederlage seine Selbstständigkeit und lebt nun als einer Ueberrest mit den Otos gemischt. Obgleich der Tag heiss und der Abend vorzüglich angenehm war, so brannte n in Koubedoux Hause dennoch Kaminfeuer, und in unserem Boote befand D's 10 Uhr eine nicht wenig lästige zahlreiche indianische Versammlung. Wir en in der Nähe kleine Excursionen unternommen. In der Höhe sah man die er (Turkey-Buzzards) schweben*), in der Prairie und den benachbarten hohen u"ien fand man schöne Vögel. Das Bebhuhn flog paarweise vor uns auf, man gte die Weihe mit weissein Unterrücken (Fako cyaneus), den gelbköpfigen »ehre andere Trupiale, die den Maysfeldern Schaden zufügen, den Indigo- 11 eo QFring. ct/anea), den gelben Stieglitz (F. tristis) u. s. w. Schöne Pflan- Wüheten in der Prairie, ein dunkel blaues Delphinium, ein fleischfarbiges Ge- Uta u. a. Arten; der Pflanzen wuchs war üppig und saftstrotzend. Ein kleiner tief §eschuittener Krick rauscht schnell bei den Wohnungen vorüber dem Missouri zu. «chon früh verliessen wir am folgenden Tage (17. Mai) die Stelle unseres Quartiers, und schifften zwischen den hochbewaldeten Flussufern hinab. Cathartes Aura Auduh. halte ich für versclüe-e Species mit dem wahren Aura von Süd-America, und nenne ihn Cath. septenlrionalis, den graukö-gen atralus von Nord-America habe ich auf meiner Heise zu vergleichen nicht Gelegenheit gefunden. --¦;¦¦- 1 L |
