Show 345 endickung am Ufer waren in der Dämmerung die Whippoorwills sehr häufig und e Stimmen hörte man überall. Mit Heiterkeit brach der folgende Morgen (14. Mai) an, auch benutzten wir ei»selben früh, schifften den Wheeping-Water-Biver (l'Eau qui pleurt) vorbei, UQd stiegen öfters an das Land, um wilde Truthühner zu jagen, deren Stimmen zu Uns herüber schallten. Oefters trafen wir diese stolzen Vögel in hohen luftigen ^aldstämmen an, unter welchen ein üppiger Gras wuchs aufsprosste; sie standen a»er zu hoch für die Schrotflinte. In diesen erhabenen luftigen Schatten lebten die coöns(en Vögel dieses Landes, besonders war dies der Fall in dem hohen, schö-en> wilden Uferwalde, an welchem wir um 10 Uhr anlegten. Dieser imposante ^a»d bestand aus allen den verschiedenen Baumarten dieses Climas, mit einem Unter-°Ize von Prickly-Ash (ZiaMhoxylum), von Haselgesträuchen, Cornus u. a., durch-nkt mit Vitis hederacea u. a. Arten dieser Gattung, mit Bhus, Smilax u. s. w. B Stämme waren hoch, gedrängt und schäftig, viele lagen umgestürzt und moder-a °"t Moosen und Flechten bedeckt am Boden, Aeste machten das Gehen be-' Verlieh. Hier schössen wir in kurzer Zeit Fringilla ludoviciana, Tanagra rubra, J'Via trichas, aestiva, Müscicapa ruticilla, Icteria viridis, Turdus felivox*) u. a.; c" Papageien wurden gesehen, dereu Gardner schon oben am l'Eau qui court Olerkt hatte, kurz man würde hier für lange Zeit Beschäftigung gefunden haben. a'len diesen Wäldern war jetzt eine gewisse Baupe so unendlich häufig, das,* Zweige und Bäume, besonders die der Weiden und Pappeln mit ihnen bedeckt ren* Man hatte die Kleidungsstücke sogleich mit diesen Baupen und ihren Gelten tadeckt, sobald man nur in das Gebüsch eintrat.
