Show 256 fen ausbreitete. Der Boden war gedielt, die Thür konnte verriegelt werden, das Brennholz lag, mit gefrorenem Schnee bedeckt, neben dem Kamine im Zimmer aufgeschichtet. Wir fühlten uns bald in dieser Wohnung sämmtlich unpässlich ufld mussten Arznei nehmen, doch lag dies wohl mehr in der Lebensart und Witterung im Allgemeinen; denn auch Sih-Säh und andere Indianer hatten Leibschmerzen, Katarrh und heftigen Husten, gegen welche Uebel Herr Kipp ihnen Heilmitte* reichte. Ich musterte den Medicisvorrath des Fortes, und fand weder Pfeffermünfc noch andere jetzt nützliche Kräuter, nichts als eine Handvoll Fliederblumen und etwas mehr von der americanischen Chamille, die etwas verschieden von der europäischen schmeckt. Einige gemeine Mittel waren noch vorhanden, leider hatten Wir aber keinen Arzt. Schneestürme hatten sich bei Nord-West-Wind eingestellt und am 23. war das Land % Zoll hoch mit Schnee bedeckt, auch war der Missouri an diesem Tage zum erstenmal unterhalb des Dorfes Mih-Tutta-Hangkusc» zugefroren, und es ist merkwürdig, dass er im vergangenen Jahre gerade au demselben Tage stand. Die indianischen Weiber sahen wir sogleich die erste Eisdecke benutzen, Löcher in dieselbe hauen und sich Kopf, Brust und Oberleib wasche0' Die Indianer hatten heute viele Biber zum Kaufe gebracht, von welchen Herr KipP 14 grosse Felle für ein Pferd und rothes Tuch kaufte, die übrigen nahmen &e wieder mit, indem sie noch ein zweites Pferd dafür forderten. Ein junger Ma erschien, welcher in einem Beutel aus dem Felle des Prairie-Dogs, Stücke durchsichtigen Fraueneises trug, welches diese Indianer im Feuer rösten, und da' aus eine weisse Farbe bereiten. Matö-Töpe hatte den Abend bei uns zugebrac und legte sich, als wir zu Bette giengen, vor das Kamin-Feuer auf die Erde, ^ er sehr sanft schlief, ohne das Feuer zu unterhalten. Am folgenden Morgen $tal er früh auf, reinigte sich, liess aber seine beiden Bisonfelle auf dem Boden höc sorglos liegen, wie dies alle Indianer thnn, indem sie von den Weissen bedi seyn wollen. Wegen der vielen Ratten, die uns während der Nacht beunruhig^1 hatte man meinen kleinen gezähmten Prairie-Fuchs über uns auf den Boden geset^ t |
