Show st« I 246 Der oben beschriebene Vogelkasten ist auch zugleich ein Kalender für die Arikkaras; denn an den sieben Chichikues zählen sie die sieben kalten Monate, indem sie bei dem mittelsten mit dem kältesten Monate zu zählen beginnen. Liu^s geht es in drei Monaten bis zur Wärme, welche fünf Monate zählt, und welche man überspringt, um am rechten Ende das Schischikue mit der Kälte wieder anzufangen, worauf man alsdann bis in die Mitte fortzählt, wo wieder die grösste Kälte stattfindet. Lässt man die fünf Monate der Wärme oder des schönen Wetters > Mai, Juni, Juli, August und September weg, so heissen diejenigen, welche a an den Schischikue's zählt: 1) der Monat, wo die Blätter abfallen (October); 2) der Monat der Nase der kleinen Schlange (November); 3) der Monat der Nase der grossen Schlange CDecember); 4) der Monat der 7 kalten Nächte (Januar); 5) der Monat, welcher die Menschen tödtet oder wegrafft (Februar); 6) der Monat, wo die wilden Gänse zurückkehren (März); 7) der Monat, wo die Vegetation beginnt (April); Die Arikkaras besitzen noch eine Menge abentheuerlicher Gaukelspiele, lerien und Maskeraden. Sie machen z. B. sehr auffallende Taschenspieler-und man sagt, es sey einst ein berühmter Jongleur unter ihnen gewesen, der ibuel1 diese lehrte. Sie veranstalten Medecine-Feste, bei welchen ganze Comödien abgeführt werden. Einer macht z. B. den Bären, in einer Bärenhaut mit Kopf uU Klauen eingehüllt, ahmt die Bewegungen und Stimmen des Thiers so genau nacn dass man glaubt einen Bären vor sich zu sehen. Er wird erschossen, man deutlich die Schusswunde, das Blut fliesst, er fällt nieder, stirbt, man zieht ihm dl Haut ab, und endlich kommt der Mann unverletzt hervor. Bei einer anderen *° Stellung haut man einem Menschen mit einem Säbel den Kopf ab, und trägt dies hinaus. Der Rumff bleibt blutend ohne Kopf liegen, und diese kopflose G&& tanzt nun lustig umher.
