Sobald man sich auf den Feind stürzt, pfeift ein jeder, und zugleich machen alle den Kriegsruf, Scheddekehch (zweites e halb, ekelt mit der Zungenspitze deutsch), einen hellen Schrei, den man tremulieren lässt, indem man mit der Hand schnell und oft wiederholt auf den Mund schlägt. Diejenigen, welche fasten und träumen, um einen guten Coup zu machen, haben das Recht eine Wolfshaut zu tragen. So viel Coups man gemacht, so viel Kriegsadler-Federn darf mau in den Haaren tragen. Alle Indianer auf ihren Kriegszügen erbauen sich Abends eine Art Bollwerk (Fort), deren schon öfters Erwähnung geschah, und worin sie gegen einen schnellen Ueberfall ein wenig gesichert sind. In Major Longs expedition to the rocky-mouniains wird erzählt, dass sie in diesen Forts oft Caches anbrächten; wir haben aber dergleichen am Missouri nicht beobachtet. Wachen stellen die Indianer bei Nacht auf ihren Kriegszügen immer aus, sobald sie sich dem Feinde nähern, und schicken dieselben oft sehr weit vor. Auf einem solchen Posten sind die Indianer sehr wachsam und in beständiger Thätigkeit. Die Todten werden nach den Gefechten nicht begraben, man lässt sie liegen, wenn man nicht Zeit hat, sie mit fort zu bringen. Die Scalps, Padöbchi (ch guttural), oder die chevelures, wie die Canadier sie nennen, hebt man auf kleine Reife gespannt, oft lange auf, nachher benutzt man die Haare derselben als Besatz an Kleidungsstücken der Männer. Gewöhnlich wird die Kopfhaut dieser Scalps unten roth ange* strichen. Die Gefangenen wurden bei den Mandans, Mönuitarris und Crows nie gemartert, wie bei den östlichen Nationen und den Pähui's. Sobald ein Gefangener einmal in dem Dorfe eingetroffen ist und daselbst Mays gegessen hat, wird er als zu der Nation selbst gehörig betrachtet, und niemand beleidigt ihn; man hat abe*" öfters den Fall gehabt, dass die Weiber den Gefangenen entgegen kamen und &e tödteten, bevor sie das Dorf erreichten, besonders in solchen Fällen, wo ihre Männer oder Söhne im Gefechte geblieben waren. Selten werden in den Gefechte11 der Indianer männliche Gefangene gemacht; man tödtet sie gewöhnlich alle. Wenn ein junger Mann Partisan werden will, so weiht er sich eine Medeciße" |
