Show 1 194 ädern und das Mark aus den grossen Beinknochen roh. Hat ein Indianer ein Stück Wildpret erlegt, so theilt er gewöhnlich mit andern. Die Eingeweide und die Haut gehören immer dem Schützen. Kommt ein ausgezeichneter Mann, welcher Coup gemacht hat, hinzu, wenn ein Thier frisch getödtet ist, und verlangt die Zunge oder ein anderes gutes Stück, so kann ihm dasselbe nicht abgeschlagen werden. Hunde gebrauchen die Mandans und Mönnitarris nicht zur Jagd. Sie schiessen Hirsche und Elke in den Waldungen, Cabris und Bighorns*) in den Prairies und den Blackhills oder benachbarten Gebirgen-*)- Auf die Cabri (Antilocapra americana OrdJ, von ihnen Koka genannt, legen sie Parks (Käkrohosch) an, aber nicht auf den Bison, worin die Assiniboins stärker sind. Brackenfidge***} erzählt, die Indianer trieben die Cabris in's Wasser und tödteten sie mit ihren Streitkolben; allein dies kann nur in einzelnen Fällen geschehen seyn, wo der Zufall eine solche Gelegenheit gab. Die Möimitarris machen jene Cabri-Parks häufiger, als die Mandans. Man sucht dazu ein sanftes Thal (Coulee) aus, das zwischen Hügeln liegt und am Ende einen steilen Abhang hat. Auf den Höhen der Hügel werden zwei convergirende Linien etwa in der Länge von ein oder ein Paar Meilen mit einzel-neu Reisern besteckt. Unter dem Abhänge erbaut man von Stangen und Reisig eine Art Zaun oder Hürde, von 15 bis 30 Schritten Länge, die mit Reisig und Heu bedeckt und ausgefüllt wird. Eine Anzahl von Reitern treibt dann die Cabris bis zwischen die weit von einander entfernten Enden der abgesteckten Reiserlinien und reitet dann schnell auf sie los. Die erschreckten Thiere stürzen sich vorwärts, folgen der Vertiefung und springen zuletzt in die Einzäunung, wo man sie ro^ Prügeln todt schlägt, oder lebendig erhält. Bären giebt es nicht viele in dieser Gegend und die Indianer sind auch keine Freunde dieser Art von Jagd, weil sie *) Warden (1. C. Vol. III. pag. 188) sagt, die Mandans nennten das Bighorn - Ahsahta, allein dieses is unrichtig5 denn der Name für diese Thierart ist Ans-chtä CAns franz., c/»<« guttural) oder Ansechtä (*a9 e kaum gehört, sech guttural). *?)
