Die Gäste erscheinen, setzen ihre Gewehre weg, und nehmen Platz, worauf Trommel und Schischikue im Kreise herum gehen, und jeder Gast singt, trommelt und rasselt5 von den während dieser schönen Musik zubereiteten Speisen darf nichts übrig bleiben. Der Hausherr nimmt nun sein Gewehr, schneidet ein Stückchen Fleisch ab, und fährt damit längs des Flintenlaufes hinab, worauf er das Fleisch in's Feuer wirft; eine Formalität, die er dreimal wiederholt. Jetzt nimmt er von der Fleischbrühe und streicht auch mit dieser längs des ganzen Laufes hinab, den Rest der Brühe giesst er in's Feuer, endlich nimmt er auch Fett, reibt das ganze Gewehr damit ein, und wirft den Rest desselben in's Feuer. Sehr viele Mandans und Mönnitarris glauben, dass sie lebende Thiere im Leibe haben, der eine ein Bisonkalb, dessen Ausschlagen er öfters fühle, andere Schildkröten, Frösche, Eidechsen, einen Vogel und dergleichen. Bei den Mönnitarris sahen wir Medecirie-Tänze der Weiber, wo die eine vorgab, sie habe eine Mays-kolbe im Leibe, welche sie hervor tanzte, und die man nachher mit Wermuth wie' der hinein complimentirte. Eine andere warf Blut aus; jedoch hiervon weiter unten. Dergleichen Gaukeleien **) kommen ebenso bei den Mandans vor. Sie erzähle» noch von einer Menge alberner Wundergeschichten und übernatürlicher Ereignisse. Ein Mädchen u. a. wollte nicht heirathen und halte auch keinen Umgang mit Männern. Einstens in der Nacht, als sie schlief, legte sich ein Manu zu ihr, worüber sie erwachte und ihn noch in eine weisse Robe gehüllt fortgehen sah. Da er iß den beiden folgenden Nächten wieder kam, so nahm sie sich vor, ihn zu zeichnen? und färbte sich ihre Hand roth. Er erschien und sie gab ihm mit der Hand eine» *) äeh guttural.
