Show 107 man hauptsächlich dem Kauen des harten trockenen Fleisches zuschreibt, sind ziemlich stark und untersetzt, zum Theil gross zu nennen, die 1Sten klein und breit. Man bemerkt nicht viele, welche man nach indianischer schön nennen könnte; doch giebt es ganz leidliche und einige hübsche Phy-|°gnomien unter ihnen. Man sagt gewöhnlich von den Mandan-Weibern, dass sie gewisse natürliche Bildung besässen, wie sie Levaillant und Peron von den entottinnen beschrieben; bei den Mandans scheint jedoch weniger die Natur, r die Kunst Theil an jener zu haben*)- Die Kinder haben häufig dünne er und dicke Bäuche, wie die der Brasilianer. Verwachsene oder von der lur verbildete Individuen sieht man unter den Mandans nur sehr selten, doch lerkte ich einen kleinen Buckeligen mit grossem schmalem Gesichte und einen ° lele"den unter den Männern. Einäugige, oder solche die ein Fell anf dem Auge u> kommen häufig vor (siehe meine Reise in Brasilien). Taubstumme gab es re5 drei Geschwister, zwei Brüder und eine Schwester, hatten diese angeborne gsaheit. Einige Kröpfe, oder vielmehr nur dicke Hälse bei den Weibern rührten Zweifel von grosser Anstrengung bei dem Tragen der Lasten auf dem Rücken *enlende Fingerglieder kommen oft vor, gehören aber nicht hieher, sondern 611 ^sichtlichen Verstümmelungen. le Hautfarbe dieser Indianer ist ein schönes, bald röthliches, bald mehr helles dunkleres Braun, welches man wohl zuweilen Kupferfarbe nennen könnte, einigen mehr graubraun, bei andern mehr gelblich.
