Show 97 Der Kopf ist oben breit, die Nasenkuppe schwarz, und feucht; inneres Ohr stark behaart; Bartborsten lang und schwarz, andere ähnliche lange Haare stehen über dem Auge Und hinter dem Mundwinkel; der Schwanz reicht hängend bis zum Fersengelenke hinab, Ur*d mit den Haarspitzen bis zur halben Ferse. Färbung: Ganzes Thier schmutzig graugelb, auf Ohren und Nasenrücken röthlich-gelb, auf dem Halse, dem Rücken, an der Schwanzspitze und der Oberseite des Schwanzes mit schwarzen Haarspitzen; Seitendes Halses, Vorderblatt, Hinterschenkel, Vorder- und Hinteren an der äusseren Seite hell rostgelb oder roströthlich; üntertheile und innere Seite der »eine weisslich, Ohren rostgelb, hier und da mit schwärzlichen Haarspitzen, inwendig Weisslich behaart; Stirn und Augengegend fahl grau-bräunlich, mit weisslichen Haarspitzen; "aijd des Oberkiefers weisslich; Unterkiefer an der äusseren Seite schwärzlich eingefasst, ubrigens weisslich, an den Obertheilen ist das Haar 4 yi" lang, dicht, an der Wurzel asch-^au, dann bis zu % der Länge gelbröthlich, alsdann mit schwarzbrauner Binde, nachher ^ieder weisslich, und an der Spitze schwarz; Haar in den Seiten 1 %" lang. Bei man-!*en Individuen fehlt die Rostfarbe gänzlich, und sie sind alsdann mehr weissgrau gefärbt. le Iris im Auge ist graugelb. Ausmessung: Ganze Länge 3' 7" 7'", also weit grösser, als das von Richardson e Exemplar; L. d. Schwanzes mit den Haarspitzen 14" 2'"; ohne die Haare an . d. Kopfs 7 Oh S 11'"; - «piize u" 3"'; l. d. Kopfs 7" 9'"; Höhe des Ohrs am Scheitel gemessen 3 » reite des Ohrs an der breitsten Stelle 2" 5'" bis 6'"; L. des oberen Fangzahnes 81/* noc«en in der Ruthe dieses Individuums 2" 3 %"' lang. - Innere Theile: Körper ausserordentlich fett, die Haut hängt fest an dem Fette; je-er I^ngenllügel ist in drei Lappen getheilt; Leber in 5 bis 7 Lappen getheilt, mit eini-kteinen Nebenzipfeln; die Gallenblase ist grün und liegt zwischen den Lappen der Le-ihre Grosse ist die einer Wallnuss; Milz gefärbt wie die Leber, schmal, 6" lang; >e des Darmcanals vom Magen abwärts bei einem 3' 6" 9'" langen Weibchen 8' 8" ^agen massig gross, zusammengekrümmt; Testikel sehr klein, nie sah ich sie bei ei-Thiere so klein; in der männlichen Ruthe ein Knochen, der in der Hauptsache gebil-e -te*i wie an C. variabilis, aber ein wenig mehr gebogen. Dieses Thier macht den Uebergang vom Fuchse zum Wolfe, passt der Gestalt nach m beide Unterabtheilungen, doch macht es die Bildung der Vorderzähne mit den Wölfen-^ehr verwandt. Die Form der Pupille hat mir bei allen Füchsen und Wölfen, die ich unechte, rund geschienen und ihre Gestalt ist bei dem todten Thiere ohnehin oft schwer ^erkennen, wie dies auch Fr. Cuvier eingesteht. Im April wirft der Prairie-Wolf in j5mer Höhle (Bau) in der Erde bis zu 10 Junge. Die Stimme ist ein Bellen, wie von dem aushunde. Er ist ein sehr schlaues Thier und geht schwieriger in die Fallen, als der . °Jf und die Füchse. Sie sind zahlreich in den Prairies und kommen im Winter zuweilen * die indianischen Dörfer, rauben alles Lebende, was sie bezwingen können, so wie todte Pt' Ma*imilian v. W. Reise d. N.-A. 2. Bd. *^ |
