Show 95 die wir hier erlebten, nichts auffinden, als die im Missouri überall vorkommende scheinbar einzige Unio-Art. Um dem Leser ein Bild der Umgebungen von Fort-Clarke zu geben, fehlt uns Jetzt noch eine Beschreibung der zahlreichen, diese ganze Gegend belebenden lanischen Bevölkerung, der drei öfters erwähnten Stämme der Mandans, Mönni-rris oder Grosventres und der Arikkaras; letztere waren in diesem Augenblicke abäsend. Um die Schilderung unseres langen Aufenthaltes an dieser Stelle, welche später nachfolgt, verständlicher zu machen, wird es am zweckmässigsten seyn, vor-erst in den drei nachfolgenden Capiteln die über jene drei indianischen Nationen ^sammelten Notizen folgen zu lassen. ) Der veränderliche Wolf, ich nenne ihn Canis variabilis, unterscheidet sich von dem ^östlichen Staaten, der dem europäischen gleicht, durch im Allgemeinen vielleicht etwas jüngre Grosse, kürzere dickere Schnauze, etwas kürzere Ohren, durch den Mangel der Lupus an den Beinen hinablaufenden dunklen Streifen, und durch seine, von der lichen grauen Wolfsfarbe bis in das rein Weisse abändernden Färbung. In einem e en Truppe dieser Thiere sieht man gewöhnlich ganz weisse und fahle, auch mehr grau «e«uschte und gänzlich graue Individuen. An dem lebenden Thiere ist die Iris im Auge lleeiSsllCn-grau, gelblich überlaufen, am äusseren Rande dunkel punctirt und um die Pupille rum gelblich-braun gefärbt, oder kurz gesagt, sie ist fahl gelblich-graubraun, und in F ^m£ebung der Pupille dunkler. Färbung eines solchen'Wolfes von der grauen Varietät: Umgebung der "gen, Backen und Seiten, der Schnauze weisslich; Stirn grau gemischt; Nasenrücken lieh Ch"fahI; die kuFzen abgestumpften Ohren fahl graugelb; obere Theile des Thiers gelb-ch~grau, mit starken schwarzen Haarspitzen; Beine, Bauch und Unterseite des Körpers 1 weissIich; den dunklen Längsstreifen an den Vorderbeinen des Canis Lupus «an an dieser Species nicht. s A«smessung: Ganze Länge 5'; L. d.
