Show i man spät im Mai Schneestürme gehabt, wo noch Indianer ihren Tod in der Prairie fanden. Im vergangenen Jahre im Monat April kamen auf diese Art Vater und {Sohn uin's Leben. Grosse Ueberschwemmuugen sind selten. Seit Charbonneaus Zeit, also seit 37 Jahren hat man deren nur zwei gehabt, die aber bedeutend waren *). Von Erdbeben, welche am Missisippi öfters verspürt werden, will man hier noch nie etwas beobachtet haben, welches auch schon Volney für den Westen bestätigt**). Den April nennen die Indianer den Pferdewinter, auch der März gehört dazu, weil man alsdann bei warmem Wetter oft die Pferde in die Prairie auf die Weide bringt, und dann zuweilen heftige Schneestürme plötzlich einfallen, welche öfters viele derselben tödten. Der Unterschied von einigen Tagen am Missouri abwärts ist oft schon bedeutend, denn in manchen Jahren erntet man bei den Arikkara-Dörfern schon die Kürbisse, wenn sie bei den Mandans erst blühen, und man hat dort Baumblüthen, wenn sie hier erst ihre Blätterknospen öffnen, und dies nimmt weiter hinab natürlich schnell zu. Vor dem Mai brechen die Blätter der Gewächse bei den Mandan-Dörfern selten aus, wohl etwas früher die Weiden (Salix)-Gebüsche an den Flüssen, auch sollen die Blumen der Prairie nicht früher blühen, und mau hat erlebt, dass am Ende des Monats Mai die Bäume noch nicht grün waren. *) Bei der ersten und stärksten derselben (Charbonneau erinnerte sich des Jahres nicht mehr) stieg das Wasser über 40 Fuss über seinen Mittelstand, die hohen Pappeln sah man nur noch mit ihren oberen Kronen, das Eis lag etwa einen ganzen Monat auf dem Lande, bis die Sonne dasselbe verzehrte. Die zweite Ueberschwemmung ereignete sich am 6. April 1826. Das Wasser stieg bei Anbruch des Tages so schnell und so hoch, dass es Charbonneau zwang, zwei Meilen vom Missouri in dem mittleren Mönnitarri-Dorfe, sich mit einigen Habseligkeiten auf ein Maysgerüste zu flüchten, wo er bei kaltem Nordwinde und Schneegestöber drei Tage ohne Feuer zubrachte. Das Wasser stieg 85 Fuss über seinen Mittelstand. Die Bewohner von 15 Dacota- Zelten unterhalb der Isle- Seche (bei dem Grand-River unterhalb der Arikkara-Dörfer) ertranken sämmtlich. In der Waldspitze bei der Mündung des Chayenne-River wohnte ein gewisser Pascal Sere, der mit den Dacotas Handel trieb. Als das Wasser schnell stieg, flüchtete er mit seinen Waaren auf das Dach seines Hauses, dieses aber wurde von dem Flusse gehoben und ein gutes Stück den Strom hinab geführt. Hier hatte das Eis einen Damm gebildet, das Haus wurde in den üferwald geflösst, und daselbst unbeschädigt nieder gesetzt. Im Jahr 1784, wo man in Europa so grosse Ueberschwemmungen hatte, gab es auch dergleichen in America, wie u. a. Volney von dem Susquehanna erzählt. **) 1. cit. I. pag. 131. |
