Als dies geschehen war, trat der Partisan der Dacotas vor und rief seinen Gegnern zu ,,man sey hier um sich zu schlagen, man wisse, dass man von beiden Seiten Manner vor sich habe, und deshalb halte er es fiir ehrenvoller, sich bloss imFreieu zu schlagen und den Wald ganzlich zu ineiden!" welches deim von beiden Theilen angenommen wurde. Man zog nun in die Ebene, und gieng auf einander Ios. Zwei Mandans (die Kohle, und die schwarze Katze) hatten friih-her einen Streit mit einauder gehabt, und wollten nun wetteifern, wer von ihnen sich am besten schlagen wurde.
