Show 53 pelwalde an, wo zwei Fuss dicke Stamme beinahe einen Kreis bildeten. Da wir das Gebiet der gefahrlichsten Iiidianer zuriickgelegt batten, und v die Kalte der J^achte immer mehr zunahm, so wurde jetzt bestandig bei unseren Bivouacs Feuer angezundet, auch fiengen heute wieder unsere Nachtwachen an, da wir uns einer zahlreichen, nahe am Missouri wohnenden iiidiaiiischen Bevolkerung naherten. Herr Bodmer hatte zur Unterhaltung unseren Bivouac im hohen Walde gezeiclinet, wie wir an die Baume gelehnt, urn das Feuer sassen und unsere Pfeife rauchten, wahrend Wolfe und Eulen uns das Nachtlied sangen. CSiehe die Vignette dieses Capitels.) Am 4. November passirten wir Mittags die Mundung des White-Earth-River (Riviere blanche) oder Goat-Penn-River von Lewis und Clarke. Hier lag sonst eiu Fort, welches man 1829 verliess, als Fort-Union erbaut wurde. Etwas unter- der Mundung dieses Flusses legten wir wegen des starken Windes an. Wald Dickungen von Gebiischen mit hohem diirrem Grase und wilde Prairies oder "losseii mit Artemisia bewachsen, bildeteu hier eiue ausgedehnte rauhe Wildniss, "urchkreuzt von Hirsch- und Bisonpfaden, wo wir mehre abgeworfene Hirschge-weihe und uberall die Ueberreste dieser Thiere fauden, so wie die Fahrten grosser aren QJJrsus ferox), wahrend wir kein grosses Wild erblickten, sondern nur rairie-Hens, einige zuriick gebliebene Blackbirds und Fliige der kleinen die Sa-niereien der Gewachse im Grase aufsuchenden Finken (Wring, linarid). Indianer schienen diese Wildniss vor noch nicht langer Zeit besucht zu haben, denn der Mist ihrer Pferde war noch ziemlich frisch. Nach einem bedeutenden Halte schifften Wlr nach 2 Uhr wieder weiter, passirten die Butte-Carree und legten Abends an einem schmalen Walde des sudlichen steilen Ufers an, hinter welchem sich die Prairie ausdehnte. Die Nacht war hell und der Wind kalt, urn 12 Uhr gieng derMond auf. Der nachste Morgen (5. November) war hell, em starker kalter Wind durch-^ehete und erstarrte die nuchternen Reisenden, bis wir gegen 8 Uhr an einer mit einzelnen dichten Gebiischen bedeckten Prairie anlegen und unser Fruhstiick berei-eu konnten, wo zahlreiche Prairie-Hens die Jager sogleich in Bewegung setzten. |
