Show 31 *bier, und es gelang mir auch den andern Hirsch, einen Spiesser zu schiessen, welcher seinen Cameraden nicht hatte verlassen wollen. Dieser erwunschte Zufall gab uns frisches Wildpret, und meine Leute kochten den ganzen Tag, obne sicb von der Stelle zu bewegen. Wir fanden in dem Walde die Spuren der grossen fiaren und ihre ganz mit Buffaloe- Berries angefullte Losung, sahen den Prairie-*uchs aus seiner Hohle fabren, und fanden keine anderen Thiere als das kleine gestreifte Erdeichhorn und eine einzige Vogelart, die inehr genannte kleine Meise le uberall in diesen Gegenden dem strengen Winter Trotz bietet. Am Nach-Kuttage hofften wir bei dem Aufbrucbe CEingeweiden) der erlegten Hirsche Wolfe Oder Fuchse zu schiessen, bielten uns also dort wohl verborgen auf; allein nur n, Elstern und Raben waren der einladenden Lockspeise gefolgt. Urn 6 Uhr trat die Dunkelheit ein, man verstarkte das Feuer fur die Nacht, an wel- noch urn 9 Uhr sassen, wahrend meine Engages auf den Boden hinge-sfreckt schnarchten. Die Dickung urn uns her war schwarz finster, die Wolfe eulten heftigN an beiden Flussufern, bis spater der Mond aufgieng und der uuange-nehme Wind sich legte, so dass wir am 3. November friih in der Dammerung ab-schiffen konnten, Wir landeten spater an verschiedenen Stellen, wo wir in dem am Ufer aufgehauften Treibholze haufig das ofiers erwahute gestreifte Erdeichhorn-c en erblickten, welches mit aufgerichtetem Schwanze uber die glatten Stamme P eilschnell hinlief und sich zwischen denselben und in Erdlochern verbare- TJeher- all h oemerkte man wieder die schwarzen Schichten der bituminosen Kohle, und fand seur schone herabgefallene Brocken davon, die noch mit Stucken des grauen, die angrenzenden Lager bildenden Sandsteins vereinigt waren. Ich vermehrte meine amnilungen mit einer hochst interessanten Reihe der Gebirgsarten des oberen Mis-oun, welche aber leider Europa nicht erreicht haben, sondern sammtlich verloren g^ngen. lch hatte jetzt auf dieser Reise den Fluss hinab bessere Gelegenheit, die s nderbaren roth gebrannten Ziegelkuppen der Hoben am Ufer zu untersuchen, und Sle gewahrten mir viel Unterbaltung.
