Show i 30 wie iiberhaupt von den Indianern die grimdlichsteu Nachrichten zu ertheilen ira Stande war* Seine lebendige Sehilderung dieses Gegenstandes, seine Mittheilungen uber die indianischen Sprachen abwechselnd mit indianischem Gesange und dem Kriegsrufe, fuhrten uns unbemerkt durch den Wald, dann iiber eine mit einzelnen Gestrauchen bewachsene Wiese, wo wir ein Volk oder eine Gesellsehaft von Prairie-Hens aufjagten, und endlich uber die Hiigelkette hinauf, an welcher wir eiuem betretenen Pfade folgten. Ziemlich vollstandige Bisonskelette und eine Menge Schadel, mit welchen man viele osteologische Cabinette hatte versorgen konnen, lagen umher. Die Hiigel selbst scheinen aus einem weisslichen Sandsteine zu be-stehen, auf welchem grauer Thou gelagert ist, und sie zeigen hier und da einige originelle Gestalten, jedoch nicht zu vergleichen mit den friiher bei Gelegenheit der Stone-Walls erwahnten. Von der Hohe der Hiigelkette hatten wir eine schone Aussicht auf das Missouri-Thai. Jenseit zieht die weissliehe Hiigelkette mit ihren sonderbaren Kanten und Schluchten dahin, vor ihnen die gelbliche Prairie mit ihren orangengelben Pappel- und Eschenwaldungen am Ufer, wo man Fort-Union erblickte; diesseit der Waldungen befanden sich dunkle Striche von Gebiischen und grosseren Waldbaumen, deren rothliche oder graubraune Farbe mit dem gelben Laube der Pappeln contrastirte, zu unseren Fiissen die zum Theil weissgrauen Sandsteiuhiigel und die graubraunen mit vertrocknetein Grase und dunkel griinen Cedern bewach-senen Vorhiigel, unter welchen sich die Grasflache mit ihreu silbergriinen Gestrauchen ausdehnte. Nachdem wir einige Meilen weit geritten waren, fanden wir die Prairie immer ebener, d. h. sie wurde zu einer sanft wellenformigen Flache, von sanften Hugelreihen durchzogen, die in der Entfernung von ein Paar Meilen mit sanft abgerundeten Kuppen gewohnlich den Horizont schliessen ? und hat man diesen erreicht, so zeigt sich schon wieder eine ahnliche einformige Aussicht, uud so fort. Das Ganze ist grau? trocken, ohne Abwechselung, mit durren kurzen Pflanzen be-wachsen, welche dennoch den schweren grossen Bison in zahlreichen Heerden er-nahren. Von Zeit zu Zeit ziehen kleine Vertiefungen mit etwas mehr Feuchtigkeit :::'?., |
