Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, JULY 14, 1967 Two Rheumatic Fever Research Awards Resea rch grants in the amount of $1.800 were made this week" by the Utah Heart Association for the study of rheumatic fever t pa icnts. Funds were made avail able from a special research budget established by donations from members of the Utah Fed eration 01 Business and sional · 'I ,. Women. Utah Profes reportedly has tho highest incidence of rheumatic fever and rheumatic disease in the nation. The grantees are Gary M. Watts and Eldon Bruce Melff, senior medical students at the Univer sity or Utah College of Medi cine. They will be under the di . rection of L. · , - r George Veasy, M.D. Watts and Melfi will evaluate regimens for prevention and treatment of rheumatic fever in Utah. A group of 100 patients with a diagnosis of acute rhcu matic fever and admitted to the Primary Children's Hospital will be studied by Watts. Melfi will do a follow up on 400 patients with either a history of rheu matic heart disease who were followed for two to ten years at Ii six month intervals through the Utah Crippled Children's Cardiac Clinics. Whenever possible these pa . · tients will be recalled for evalu ation .after obtaining perrnission from their private physicians.
