Show 301 [ YOUNG CAREER I WOMAN F our speech sessions were scheduled and the girls spoke in alphabetical order by state. Utah's turn arrived on Monday afternoon during the last sched uled speech session. I chose the topic "A Woman's Image" so that I could communicate my conviction that a need exists for women in business and pro fessional fields to establish a new image, i.e., an image of femininity and competence which Will be accepted by her male counterparts. On Monday afternoon we elected five give their women to speeches before the convention. These five received the Helen Eisenhower Medal. Four of chosen to participate in a panel given the evening, Tuesday, to be moderated by Barbara Walters of the "Today" show. The panel was en titled "Youth in this Age." I was fortunate to be selected as a panel member. us were same Mary J. Colbath I thank each member of the Utah Federation for giving me the opportunity to attend the B. P. W. National Convention as Utah's Young Career Wo man. Forty-two young women representing 40 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, met in the Nas sau Suite of the New York Hilton on Saturday, July 22, 1967. Each of us was asked to give a one min ute biography which served to introduce us to one another. The average age of the girls was 24 and more than two-thirds of our number had completed a college education. I was the only attorney participating in the program. Tuesday evening, dressed in long gowns, we were presented individually to the Convention by Miss Sarah Jane Cunningham, National President. Ap pearing on the panel was one of the highlights of my week. We discussed the equality of women, dis crimination in business and the professions, mar riage and career, and related topics. The panel was completely spontaneous and stage fright deterred none of us from expressing opinions sometimes pro vocative and always sincere. The Young Career Woman Program was not all work. The National Committee had scheduled an evening in Greenwich Village for us and had also arranged for us to attend the Opening Session of the Conven The session was conducted with a degree of efficiency that impressed all of us. I wish to share this souvenir and my renewed enthusiasm with each of you by speak In order to prepare a Young Career Woman Program for presentation to the entire convention body, we each gave a three minute talk on a topic chosen from a prepared list of suggested topics. The talk was to enable us and the National Committee to choose 9 girls to represent us during our Tuesday night Program. Each girl was allotted 10 minutes; three minutes to speak and seven minutes to hear that speech criticized by her peers. ing to as many clubs within the State which will extend that privilege to me.
