Show MARCH Last summer our Federation was asked to sponsor due the MARCH OF DIMES BALL for 1968. After immediate the. in clubs consultation with the ten Salt Lake City area, upon which the burden of this effort would have to fall, President Jean Fox an nounced at Fall Board Meeting that this challenge had been accepted. I am sure none of us dou bts the value of any of the various medical research programs that we are called a few facts that upon to support. May I quote just our commitment into sharper focus for may bring us? The March ofDimes was first organized to fight In polio's worst year there were over 57,000 cases in the United States. In the first 100 months of 1967, there had been only 40 polio. cases. Approximately 15 million Americans of all ages have one or more birth defects which af fect their daily lives. They include such dis orders as mental deficiency, diabetes, diseases of bones, muscles, or joints, blindness, hearing impairment, heart defects, speech defects, and a variety of inborn defects. There are over 1,600 Utah birth defect pa tients each year. In Salt Lake County, of the estimated 10,162 live births, 700 will be born with birth defects. The Birth Defects Treatment Center at Pri Hospital in Salt Lake City serves Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and northern Arizona. It is one of 1 00 throughout the country supported by the National Foun dation-March of Dimes. The grant for this center for 1967 was $42,365. mary Children's . The Salk Institute for Biological Studies at L.aJolla, California, is supported by the Na tzonal Foundation-March of Dimes and is probably one of the most importan t research projects in the world today. There they con centrate on basic research of all diseases from the common cold to cancer and explore the very tiny world of the human cell where so many of the things that plague us happen. the National Foundation-March of R:cently Dzmes has called for an intensified research effort to determine if damage done by LSD and other drugs to human chromosomes may not also cause birth defects. OF DIMES The weapons in the fight against birth defect; March of Dimes-financed nationwide pro grams or research, medical care, public and pro are fessional education. March of Dimes volunteers are described a people who want to serve others and who ar doing what they can to make the world a bet ter place for everyone. As sponsors of the March of Dimes Ball which be held at THE TERRACE in Salt Lake City, I DAY, FEBRUARY 2,1968, each B.P.W. meml is a volunteer. Our role in this effort is to pron and sell the tickets to the ball which will brir funds to help solve the problems mentioned ab Of course, much of the ground work has alr been done: 125,000 tickets have been counter in sets of ten; 12,000 letters have .been addre stuffed, and mailed: arrangements have been 1 for a ticket trailer downtown and ticket boot various areas. During the two weeks immedi prior to the Ball, the trailer and booths wi manned during regular business hours, and y01 imagine the number of people and hours thes. ious phases of the job will require. The response to requests for help and the wi ness of members to participate in this project been wonderful, and I have great confidence ir ability of our Federation to come through in g style. However, each BPW member must feel it he. sponsibility to assist with ticket sales individu We cannot depend on sales by mail, booth trailer alone. We must do a person-to-person se job, too. Tickets will be made available thrc each club, and we trust that each member will 1 this as a personal crusade. Let's show our community and state that a jol cepted by the Business and Professional Worn Clubs is one accepted with confidence and wit} sured success. See you at the BALL!! H.
