Show k his "Second- to Non-e" Troop 423 of Or em, who had presented our beautiful Flag ceremony; introduced Elvis Terry who had led us in the singing of our Na tional Anthem; and then presented our lovely State officers to our gathering. We felt so pleased that our President Jean Fox, our immediate 'Past Presi dent Anne Kidd, and our 2nd Vice-President J ose phine Yergensen were on our stage with us along with of course Helen Dahle, our Corresponding Secretary. wa! 11en one OUI the wa! dbc lOin! thcrr lome You : lin. lru lucrI 'ai1 What a beautiful sight they presented, so Sparkling and fresh and it made one think of flowers seated among the flowers decorating our stage. Adding to the pretty look was Laura Terry and Annie, wife of our key speaker, Dr. Vasco Tanner. Both of them wore white "thank you" corsages which Willie and Lynn and I had sent to them that afternoon. Our evening would not have been complete without a few words from our officers and we took many of the little treasure thoughts home that they left with us. Then Dr. Tanner, whom we call Mr. History because of his great store of knowledge along this line and because he has served as President of the Utah His torical Society; President of the National Sons of the Utah Pioneers; editor of the 'Proceedings of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters' for many years, and founder and editor of the periodi cal 'The Great Basin Naturalist,' was called to the Podium. I L reading and looked up, the applause began and roll ed on and and the most beautiful look came It was white. There were tears in the on over his face. eyes of almost everyone we could see, not exclud ing those on our stage and then as the applause died away, it began again. Dr. Tanner stepped forward, bless him, and put his arm about our young man's shoulders and spoke so that all might hear, "Jim,. any young man who can write and mean what 'you have just read to us can certainly mean something in life; and keep trying." He then handed him his Flag Kit. Jim returned to his seat and those shoulders were erect and that head held high and we could see his Dad and his teacher were very proud of him. Now the great moment had come and the only win remaining in the audience knew she had indeed been chosen as our Essay first place winner. Her name is Rose Marie Cloward and she is but 13 years old, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cloward, and an eighth grade student at Orem Jr. High School. Her essay is beautiful! ner The names of the second place winners: Ralph Clegg 12, Shari Huish 17, Julie Martinez 12, Joseph Oliphant 15, and Jim Smith 16. We told all those wishing copies of these essays that they would be available to anyone who wished them as the thoughts expressed by our young people are truly worth reading. What an honor it was just to introduce him to the audience. We told about some of the achievements he had made in conservation areas also so that our award winners would know what a truly great man he is and better appreciate the honor about to be bestowed on them when, from his hands, they would accept their Flags and the Bond. Again, we could "feel" heartbeats and I think we are safe in saying that some were the heartbeats of proud parents and friends. First we called our six certificate winners forward, by one. They are: Reva Clegg 15, Cathy Cryer 15, Wayne Gardner 15, Linda Golding 12Y2, Becky Puckett 15, and Michael Robinson 15. one Next, five second place winners were called forward and again, one by one and in alphabetical order, and as each came forward we asked the to parents come forward also and stand in front of the Podium as their boy or girl read their winning essay. Last on the list of these five was Jim Smith and as his name was called he came forward. His Dad and " his teacher came with him. Now before the Program we had told Dr. Tanner something of Jim's story and he was so very inter ested in him. As Jim stepped forward and began his reading a hush fell over the audience and it was as if they suddenly knew that the essay was not just a story but that Jim was sharing a part of him self with them. His voice was loud and clear and could be heard the length of the hall easily with the help of the fine P.A. system we had. As he finished Left to right: Rose Marie Cloward; Jim Smith, Joseph Oliphant, Julie Martinez, Shari Huish, Ralph Clegg. Dr. Tanner's moving talk then to us all proved to be but another highlight of our evening and was so in spiring in fact that I became so caught up i the things he told us about our Flag and our hentage and our need to guard our natural resources that I completely forgot what I wished nxt to say -to our visitors and had to refer to our Podium notes. As he turned away toward his seat we took his arm and amid much applause presented him with a beu tifully wrapped golden and green package and WIth |
