Show 19 The year for the 1965-66 offi cers began last spring, a Iso at Pangu itch, when Director Edna Sargent and Vice Director Blanche Dotson were insta lied by proxy, since both were down with the flu. Karla Hu let, Secretory- Treasurer, was a Iso insta lied. The first meeting conducted by these officers was the Fall District Conference in Beaver on October 16,1965, at the Ponderosa Cafe. Fifty club members attended along with four state officers. The club presidents held a council meeting prior to the conference. The first visit made by the district officers was in July when they accompanied the state officers and members of the Cedar City Club to a meeting in St. George. Here a discussion was held regarding the geographic division of their members into two clubs. Because of the winter weather and the pressure of work, the district officers were unable to make further visits until spring began to arrive. One highlight was the Charter Night for the new Zion BPW Club, held in Hurricane 'on February 17. State officers could not be there; so the district officers had the honor of presenting the new club charter and initiating the 25 charter members. Officers of the sponsoring Cedar City BPW Club insta lied the club officers. Kathryn Brewer and her officers and members planned a beautiful affair, and the ceremonies were appropriate and impressive. With Vice Director Blanche Dotson being ill for about two months, the balance of the club visits were corried out by Edna and Karla. The members of the Milford Club made the two of them welcome on March 7 at a meeting on "Finance," and the'members of the Panguitch Club received them on March 16 at their "Civic Participation" meeting. The last visit was to the Beaver Club on Apri I 4, where they a II en joyed hearing a lecture on "Human Rights" and seeing a stimulating parliamentary procedure demonstration. Of course, the Cedar Club heard from the district officers severa I times. All three district officers attended the State Winter Board meeting early in February, a long with other members from the Southern District. Karla attended the Fa II District Conference in September. The big event of the year in the Southern District was the Youthpower--USA Conference held April 2,1966, at the College of Southern Utah in Cedar City under the genera I chairmansh ip of Ada D. Carpenter of the Cedar City Club. The Conference required many days and weeks of planning and work, but all committee members and clubs cooperated to make it a success. Although the date chosen turned out to be one fu II of other events requiring the attendance of students in the area, 44 students representing eight schools were there and a good number of observers. Those in charge felt that on the whole it was very worthwhi Ie. They hope that the ideas presented by the outstanding speakers wi II be long remembered by the participants. BPW Clubs in the Southern District are doing many worthwhile things and are having interesting meetings. The district officers state that it has been a privilege for them to meet with the clubs, get better acquainted, and to attempt to increase the spirit of un ity and enthusiasm for BPW work. |
