Title Page315
Description STATE CONCLAVES SINCE 1894 members, is the longest continuing Associate Member. Other organizations have also been closely affiliated with the organization for lengthy periods of time, among them the state's utilities -- Mountain Fuel, USWest (formerly Mountain Bell), Utah Power & Light, Dixon Paper Company and Zellerbach Paper Company. Maintaining ties with UPA for lesser, but nevertheless extended periods of time, have been Questar Corporation, Metro Services, Utah Department of Transportation, First Security Bank, Rockwell Graphics Systems, Flint Ink Company, the University of Utah, LDS Church Public Communications and Brigham Young University. The Honorary Publisher Award was created in February, 1962 for the purpose of honoring the late Gus Backman, longtime Secretary of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. He'd given a welcoming talk at the opening session of UPA Winter Conventions for more than three decades and at that time was retiring. Retiring from Chamber work, that is, but destined to be active thereafter as a member of the Pro-Utah Committee. In tongue-in-cheek manner, as evidenced by its verbiage, the award conveys the organization's appreciation to those who've contributed their time and talent to UPA, even though not active members. The words came from the typewriter of Jim Corn-well, that year's association president, with a thoughtful assist from Gordon P. Owen, Jr., USPA's manager. It was modified in more recent times by Adrien Taylor to conform with changing production methods. The text reads: "Utah Press Association, with malice aforethought and human desire to share our misery with others, i , -:¦: ¦¦ GUS BACKMAN (left) - was first Honorary Publisher. 315
