| Show THE UTAH NEWSPAPER HALL OF FAME Little more thanyear later Conover decided to resurrect the Eureka Reporter which traced its beginnings to the turn of the century but had closed with the demise of mining near the once-bustling community It too has now beenpart of the Springville-based organization for more than four decades The emphasis on community progress maintained by ConoverSpringville Herald was transmitted as well to the Mt Pleasant and Eureka newspapers which have championed numerous improvement projects For many years the Herald was one of onlyhandful of less-than-daily Utah papers boasting readership verified by Audit Bureau of Circulations Harrison wasbeliever in documented evidence of his paperacceptance and in addition to ABCauthentication he heeded the advice of advertising agency executives and conducted local readership surveys to support his claims Though he didnopenly search for conflict Conover was always willing to assert his position when there was public disagreement He literally went to war with Nebo School District over its refusal to permit access to minutes of its meetings -and wonlandmark Supreme Court decision affirming the publicright to monitor the activities of elected agencies His editorials and Our Fear His would chart Utahdecision to seek often labelled the Legislature Our Hopeconcerns for the legislative decisions which future course no doubt playedpart in his place in that important body himself Suc cessful he served in 1957-1959 But both before and after hehad first-hand experience in the lawmaking process he often challenged and sometimes commended legislators in his edito rial columns One year when it was evident projected expenditures substantially exceeded anticipated revenues he wrote This week our Legislature is in session Never before has this body been confronted by more serious and difficult problems The price-tag is attached to most of them Grandiose plans for 663 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
