| Show UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION conventioning publishers gathered With diminished delivery of national space to weeklies it was given even less credibility Though by no means out of existence the national agency is today only lightly regarded among most Utah publishers And in fact is no longer an adjunct of National Newspaper Association In 1995 it was purchased by its 15-year sales director Hilary Howe of Troy Michigan Plans call for NNA to act as marketing partner and Howe to maintain an affiliation with the association One sizeable advertising budget never touched by ANR but very productive to Utah newspapers was liquor Understandably it was controversial instate wheremajority of the population belonged toreligious group energetically opposed to consumption of alcohol With the sale of liquor in the hands ofcontrol commission Utah occupiedrather unique niche in that distillers were eager to tout their wares and there was no prohibition against doing so Publishers on the other hand had to decide whether or not to accept such advertising Some did some didn For many years the state wide -Yes moot Utah rate schedule included columns answering that question or No on hard liquor wine and beer Though today ita issue because of changes in advertising policy by the Liquor Control Commission glance atrandomnly chosen rate card when it wascontroversial issue 1965 indicated 38 of the 52 weekly papers accepted all forms of alcohol lineage and 14 declined hard liquor Six of the latter group would print wine and beer advertising The solicitation of advertising has continued to befocal point of the association through the years and has met with considerable success Keeping pace with the expanded computerization of the papers an ultra-modern classified innovation was introduced in May 1995 Operating in conjunction with GeoTel Corporation of Columbia Missouri UPA launched the ADZ Service which utilizes toll-free long distance telephone to link buyers and sellers of items ordinarily negotiated through want ads -homes automobiles various types of equipment 258 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
