| Show YOUNG PAPERS THAT ACTUALLY ARE OLD June 16 1937 fire destroyed the plant and for five months the paper was produced by mimeograph while equipment to resume letterpress printing was purchased and set up innew location Platte Lyman becamelessee-publisher on April 28 1949 and on April 20 1951 the paper was purchased by Birl Brewington who was also publisher of the Press in nearby Dove Creek Colorado William McCormick Dove Creek banker and uranium millionaire Charlie Steen took over financial responsibility for the Record before Larry and Betty Roe bought it on May 1954 They were succeeded early in 1956 by Warren Rex and on August 23 1956 by James Pat Heal formerly co-publisher of papers in Murray and Lehi On July 10 1959 Olds oncepublisher in Sharon Springs Kansas acquired the Record then sold it on November 11 1960 to Mr and Mrs George Jones Bert Alward of Pullman Washington replaced Jones as the publisher on July 1965 Miles and Jane Turnbull of Chicago bought the paper May 13 1971 Both had been employed by the magazine-publishing Meredith Corporation he with Successful Farming and she with Better Homes Gardens Mr Turnbullparents were longtime owners of the Reporter in Diagonal Iowa The Miles Turnbulls purchased the Echo in Leavenworth Washington and left Monticello on May 27 1976 He later became executive director of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association and wasjournalism faculty member at Central Washington University but returned to the Echo upon retiring from the WNPA position Not long after selling the newspaper he was the victim offatal heart attack on June 11 1994 Jim and Gertrude Shannon of Lexington Missouri bought the Record from the Turnbulls and were the publishers until September 1980 At that time sisters Joyce Martin and Ingrid Adams acquired the paper They continued until turning the reins to Greg Duerden on October 1992 then resumed as publishers on April 1994 93 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
