THE BETTER NEWSPAPER CONTEST division which has been maintained for the ensuing 39 years. The trophy established by Dean Culmsee became a permanent fixture for Community Service and Utah State University sponsored that contest for decades. The school did, however, decide to have judging performed in the same manner as that of other categories -- by journalists from other states. Questar Corporation has succeeded USU in recent years as the award's sponsor. Its plaque was named for R. LaVaun Cox, a onetime Manti Messenger publisher and past president who became the director of the corporation's public relations division. At the beginning of the General Excellence competition, brothers Karl and Clyde Pannier of Intermountain Stamp Company created heavy, oval-shaped bronze plaques to be given papers which won General Excellence honors. That tradition, too, continued for many years -- until, in fact, the Panniers disposed of their firm. Subsequently, Mountain Fuel Supply has become the donor of a General Excellence plaque named for its longtime public relations representative, Kirby Kirkman. For a lengthy period of time the A. E. Heinsohn Company provided attractive and rather expensive silver pieces for winners of Excellence in Typography. And brothers Howard and Harold Gerber, co-owners of Twin Typographers, contributed to the contest the annual printing of dozens of parchment certificates which went to first, second and third-place winners in each category. Before computerization and cold typography simplified that process, such certificate preparation was a tedious letterpress procedure. KIRBY KIRKMAN - MFS plaque is named for him. 389 |
