THE UTAH NEWSPAPER HALL OF FAME Like many community newspapermen, he was a civic leader. He helped to establish the Chamber of Commerce and served as president; headed the Kiwanis Club and was a director of Riverside Country Club. He was an officer of Utah Manufacturers Association, president of the historic-minded Utah Westerners and state prexy of the International Association of Assessing Officials. A quiet partner in his businesses, though never far behind the scenes, was his wife, the former Margaret Bird, to whom he was married February 2, 1933. She brought management acumen to Art City Publishing and was a skilled proofreader. They were parents of a son, Martin, and a daughter, Mary. Plaudits were many after his death. All, actually, conveyed the message well expressed by the Provo Daily Herald, which concluded a commending editorial, "He piled up an impressive list of accomplishments in two significant careers and was an outstanding citizen and leader. The county is a better place for his having served here." Those words, in fact, are a thumbnail summary of the achievements which form his credentials for induction into the Utah Newspaper Hall of Fame. Harrison Conover is a most worthy addition to that select group of outstanding journalists. 665 |
