| Show CHAPTER FIVE Young Papers That Actually Are Old In addition to the many publications both successes and failures which dot early annals of Utahnewspaper history another group must be recorded These were the younger publications -old by todaystandards but of more recent vintage than many of their predecessors Utah weekly newspapers which do not trace their lineage as far back as the associationfounding but are published today and havelengthy history served these communities AMERICAN FORK The present-day Citizen was the fifth and last paper begun in that community after the manuscript Weekly Gazette had played out its reportorial role The Independent was the first the product of Bledsoe and James McCoard begun March 21 1890 and closed March 14 1892 As its doors were being shut Newman Mix introduced the American Fork Republican which bowed out in the same year It was followed by Milton ScottItem which had been launched only months before UPA1893 organizational meeting in Lehi which he attended The Item was purchased in 1894 by William and Eva Smith formerly publishers of the Kaysville Eagle which had succumbed to newspaper malnutrition Scott shifted location to Provo where in 1897 he began and closed the short-lived Utah County Press The Itemname was changed by the new owners to the World and was soon acquired by the publishing combination of Dunkley and Scott Thereupon it survived until April 1897 Neither of the two co-publishers left first names or other Jjournalistic records in the Beehive state 79 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
