| Show UPA FUNCTIONS -THEN AND NOW during the several decades when dailies were not active members of the association Then in such situations UPA lent its support and endorsement by adding its name and voice to the dispute The unanimous participation of Utahdailies in the association during recent years has createdunited front and given greater strength to UPAability to influence Consequently this has reinforced any and all complaints about failure to divulge information locally or statewide For the most part such objectives have been achieved short of the courtroom but on occasion it has been necessary for the judicial system to support or deny the validity of the print mediaclaim Informing its members of association activities and important developments in the field of journalism has been handled in various ways during the first century of USPA UPA In early years infrequent correspondence from the president to the membership sufficed In1920-1930 era when Roy Porte the knowledgeable secretary of commercial printers organizations lent his skills to Utahcommunity weeklies periodic bulletin was produced and mailed During the 1940s part of the presidentassignment was to produce and distributemonthly publication named The Ute Press Bulletin Sadly neither bound volumes nor microfilm reproductions have been found Beginning in January 1952 the Utah Pub lisher Printer was published with the association manager as its editor It was both well-read and financially successful fordecade andhalf In fact one banner issue in June 1961 contained an all-time record 36 pages But after succeed ing years of red ink operation the Board decided to bring it to an end at the conclusion of 1974 Thereafter bulletins from the manager sometimes with regular frequency sometimes on an indefinite schedule informed the membership On January 1990 Janice Keller then newly-named as manager created Pressing Issues which soon reached and has maintained weekly publication dates 263 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
