| Show PRESS UTAH ASSOCIATION Charles Goodwin was accorded the respectful title Judge during his long journalistic career in Utah It wasreflection of his three-year term as an elected District Judge in Washoe County Nevada That however was but one of his alter ego He had also beenminer school teacher andpublished author Born April 1832 on his familyfarm near Rochester New York he received his early education in the academies of that city The glamour of the California gold strikes when he was stillteen-ager prompted him to become 49er He sailed to Panama crossed the isthmus survived Panama fever which was fatal to many enduredperilous voyage on the Pacific Ocean and finally reached San Francisco But he didnbecomeprospector Instead settling in the gold strike area at Marysville he went into the lumber business Five years later when hebuilt upsizeable concern his plant was swept by fire total loss Displaying what contemporaries called his hopeful dispo sition something characteristic of the man he started over While teaching school he also studied law and later practiced his profession in Plumus County Goodwin then moved to Nevada Mining still heldfascination for him and he operated in many of the liveliest of the statesilver camps It was in Virginia City during the boom days of the Comstock Lode that he launched his journalistic career as editor of the famed Territorial Enterprise There he was associated with men whose names subsequently became internationally famous -Mackay Fair Flood Sharon and hundred more His reminisces teem with interesting accounts of all of them In his immediate environment in the Enterprise office were Mark Twain Bret Harte Dan DeQuille Joseph Goodman Daggett andhost of others little less famous some staff formining camp newspaper 542 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
