| Show UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION esteem his contemporaries extended him which is the founda tion for his admittance to the Utah Newspaper Hall of Fame ELISHA WARNER Spanish Fork Press Born April 24 1889 Died December 1979 Installed in Hall of Fame at St George 1992 He wasnewspaperman for 41 years in relatively small communities and took pride in the self-bestowed title Country Printer Before hereached his 21st birthday Elisha Warner was editor and publisher of the Spanish Fork Press the newspaper of the town where hegrown up -not an easy task The somewhat appropriate Biblical passage warns prophet is not without honor save in his own country Thirty two years later he became publisher of the Payson Chronicle onlyfew miles from his lifelong home Understandably rather intense rivalry existed between the two towns but with quiet diplomacy he also succeeded there He published and subsequently with his brother Ezra co-published -the Press from 1910 until 1942 He was then publisher of the Chronicle from 1942 til 1947 Files of both papers reflect his journalistic skill He also had youthful albeit rather brief brushes with newspapering in Yreka California and Gooding Idaho After leaving journalism he devoted his final 14 working years to an entirely different walk of life and was successful there as well Warner was but 20 years old when in 1909 circumstance thrust him into the publisherchair at the Press Within onlyfew months hebecome its owner as well Despite the handicaps of youth and hometown familiarity he becamewell-respected member of the Fourth Estate and guided his newspapers through two world conflicts and an economic slump so severe it would forever after be known as The Great Depression 642 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
