| Show UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION of judgedecisions established many traditions which have continued through the years Papers entered were those pro duced in 1951 Two men whose names would long be associated with publishing excellence shared the spotlight at the first Awards Banquet Mr ClaybaughBox Elder Journal received the General Excellence trophy in Groupand Harrison ConoverEureka Reporter won in Group Clif MemmottUintah Basin Standard of Roosevelt received the Community Service Award which continued to be sponsored by Dr Culmseedepartment In the beginning and for many years thereafter winners could not compete in the following yearcontest Publishers of one yearGeneral Excellence papers constituted the next yearcontest committee Actually both publishers who won in 1951 could ve been in the 1952 competition One was Claybaugh published the Box Elder News on Tuesday and the Journal on Friday Hence his News was eligible to compete although its publisher elected not to enter Conover was publisher of not only the Eureka paper in Group but also the Mt Pleasant Pyramid in that class In addition he published the Springville Herald Grouppaper He chose to enter the latter newspaper in 1952 and won General Excellence The Groupvictor was the Morgan County News published by Albert Al Epperson The contest was successful from the outset and when the association reached its centennial the annual competition had taken place without interruption for 43 years In its early days the contest was largely judged by journalism instructors and students at Utahthree major univer sities As time went on though newsmen and women agitated for judging by their peers and finally the present-day system of having journalists of other states act as judges was adopted In turn Utahns have annually been called upon to perform similar duties for other state associations Following the 1953 contest year it was decided three circulation breakdowns would make for more equitable competition Asconsequence Groups II and III were arranged 388 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
