UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION THE WRITER OF "Ant's Eye View, " which captured first place in the National Editorial Association's 1959 competition for humorous columns, was rewarded by Utah State Press Association at the February, 1960 convention. President Jack Warner, right, presents an appropriately-inscribed desk pen set to H. C. (Mac} McConaughy of the Morgan County News. witness "Mac's" blue-ribbon presentation was the largest convention delegation from any state, including host Colorado. The strange aspect of it? McConaughy's entry judged the nation's best had not been a Utah winner at the February conclave. The situation cemented the contention of many publishers that judging simply represents one person's opinion and another judge might draw entirely different conclusions about the same set of entries. That philosophy, incidentally, has often provided a degree of satisfaction after plaque-presentations where a contestant who thought his or her entry was worthy of a first place didn't get so much as a mention. 400 |
