| Show UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION compiled from trips around the county was published All proceeds from sales of the thousand copies went to the Boy Scouts who went house-to-house selling them The hundreds of slides hetaken illustrated the many talks he gave before banquets and audiences far and wide As newspaper historian Cecil Alter in his Early Utah Journal ism described it Beckwith managed his own Chautauqua circuit The author labelled the Delta man one of the statemost picturesque publishers and observed He speaks with authority on fossils Indians history geology anthropology paleontology photography snakes Boy Scouts -everything under the Millard sun Not only the Millard area commanded the manatten tion though He also studied and wrote about other parts of Utah including the Vernal areadinosaurs and Bryce and Zion Canyons And he travelled to New Mexico to research the Indians of the Southwest He died on June 11 1951 inFillmore hospital three days after sufferingheart attack He was buried at Delta after rites conducted by the Masonic Order He wasmember of Evanston Salt Lake City and Eureka lodges His son Frank died suddenly on May 12 1956 After operating the Chronicle fortime the family sold the paper in 1958 to Robert Riding young man who had trained in the newspaper and is the present publisher Frank Beckwith leftrich legacy in his well-edited newspaper which Alter wrote reflectedphilosophy all his own which makes the Chronicle almostpersonal organ He added to thatsecond legacy for all who knew him in his books photographs personal ideals and ideas FRANK BECKWITH Millard County Chronicle Born December 22 1904 Died May 12 1956 Installed in Hall of Fame at St George 1984 He publishedfine weekly newspaper and wasleader in the development of the West Millard area he loved And Frank Beckwith found something humorous in 426 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
