| Show UPA FUNCTIONS -THEN AND NOW by Salt Lake City agency executive Al Thomas when president of the Salt Lake Advertising Club Letface it he said advertising ascareer iswonderful experience ButI wonder how many of us impart that feeling to the second generation What are we doing to interest young students to study advertis ing ascareer Have you told that bright young man or woman entering college that advertising needs many new peopleminimum of 15 000 each year To my mind advertising is one of the most interesting and exciting occupations in the world Its heartline is ideas and ideas are wonderful things to work with Advertising is not the glamorous occupation so often portrayed in movies novels and television Rather it isserious sober business the business of applying talent time and money to the job of keeping sales moving and the economy alive So encourage that bright young person to takelook at the field of advertising Who knows but what you would be doing him or herfavor and advertising too Although its member publishers have from time to time pursued public boards which were reluctant to divulge information about their decisions or expenditures UPA itself has engaged in such matters only as part ofjoint media effort In fact it has traditionally not lent support to its own individual papers when they ve engaged in those campaigns locally Some publishers have demonstrated more courage in that area than their contemporaries insisting on the newspaperright to know in order to fulfill its obligation to inform its readers about what both elected and governmentally-appointed organizations are doing In the same vein few weekly newsmen have been quite outspoken about open meetings laws whereas the inactivity of many others has reflected that in their particular case they didnfeel the end result justifed the controversy However thatnot been true with most of Utahdailies They ve literally carried the banner in challenging any situa tion which seemed to reflect withholding of information Salt 261 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
