| Show UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION Over the years publishers now and then enjoyed out-of-the-ordinary experiences because USPA UPA existed In February 1961 for example the Navy took ten Utahns on one of its informative junkets aboard the aircraft carrier Midway The newsmen went aboard at San Francisco spent five days as Navy guests at PearHarbor and returned to the mainland aboardmilitary transport plane An even more unusual venture took place August 10 1962 when eleven weekly and daily publishers were guests of President John Kennedy atWhite House luncheon The president discussed international relations the economy the con tinuing stress in Berlin and governmental functions in Utah including possible uses for the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot andgrant being sought from the Area Redevelopment Agency for expansion of Park Cityskiing potential Utah non-daily publishers involved were Glenn Bjornn Charles Claybaugh Memmott Russ Innes McConaughy Rytting Sumner Clif and William Wallis The daily newsmen were Glasmann Ogden Standard Examiner Preston Robinson Deseret News and Jack Gallivan The Salt Lake Tribune That the association has playedvaried and important role in the long-range improvement of Utahweekly press is an undeniable fact It has probably not been all things to all people it has experienced discord along with its harmony but overall the plus factors have far exceeded the minus ones And it has been very much family affair through the years since from its beginning it has encouraged children of members to attend both its summer and winter meetings Asresult numerous editors and publishers of today have literally grown up in the associationatmosphere and are imbued with the importance of UPA and the necessity for its continuance Examples Charles Tuff Claybaugh Kevin and Craig Ashby Susan Buys Martin Conover Howard Larry and Gail Stahle Sam Taylor Sue Dutson Allan Gibson Brent Sumner Sena Flanders Lane Henderson and Jack and Steve Wallis 264 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
