| Show THE UTAH NEWSPAPER HALL OF FAME keenest interest was in human beings and his greatest delight was when he was able to pay respect or make some contribution to those who needed it Those are the achievements of Jesse Earl and his credentials for inclusion among Utahmost noteworthy journalists of the past CHARLES ENGLAND Logan Journal Born October1863 Died January 28 1952 Installed in Hall of Fame at Salt Lake City 1962 His parents William and Eliza Seamons England were emigrants from the country of their birth which was also their namesake And though Charles spent virtually all his life in the Logan area he was born in Tooele on October 1863 His father was temporarily employed there The family soon after made its home in Hyde Park Cache county community and that vicinity would be the scene of his entire journalistic career Charles was only 12 years old when his father died and being the oldest of seven living children he was forced to assume responsibility as the family provider In addition to operating the 22 acre farm which his mother now owned he worked for other farmers in the community and during Lhose teen -age years was referred to by family and friends as Farmer Charles Early in life England realized the value of an education and in order to acquire it he becamejanitor in the school building in exchange for his tuition The hard physical labor included cutting wood for the schoolstoves Later with financial help from others he attended Brigham Young College in Logan and then was accepted for enrollment at the University of Deseret forerunner of todayUniversity of 487 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
