Description UTAH PRESS ASSOCIATION Goodwin, for outstanding promotion of literacy. Ogden-Weber County Humane Society, 1994 -- recognized the Standard-Examiner for its coverage and support of the Ogden Animal Shelter's successful Adopt a Pet program. Business Leaders Against Organized Crime, 1992 -- the local organization, sponsored by the Weber County Attorney's office, honored the newspaper for coverage of the group's efforts to crack down on drug dealers and other organized criminals. American Heart Association, 1993 ~ issued a certificate of appreciation to the Standard-Examiner for service toward the group's goals. Beginning in 1985, the newspaper organized and sponsored an annual road race to raise funds for the association in honor of former Standard-Examiner General Manager Robert D. Monson, who died in 1984. Glasmann/Standard-Examiner Adult Literacy Program -The Glasmann family, former owners of the Standard-Examiner, established an adult literacy program in the late 1980s which is operated under the auspices of Weber State University. Glasmann/Standard-Examiner Utah State University Internship Program - The former Standard-Examiner ownership family in the late 1980s created an endowment at Utah State University to fund, in cooperation with the Standard-Examiner, an internship for USU journalism and photojournalism students to serve summer internships in the Standard-Examiner news department. Standard-Examiner Distinguished Student Awards -- the newspaper in 1994 began a program in which the top two percent of high school seniors in Northern Utah high schools receive recognition as Standard-Examiner Distinguished Students and four among that group win scholarships of $1,000 to the college of their choice. -- Research and preparation by Flora Ogan, associate editor; Donna Bingham, librarian and Mark Shenefelt, assistant managing editor. 162
