On its website (www.bp.com), bp launched a "Gulf of Mexico Restoration" campaign that provided publics with technical information about the Gulf's return to normalcy. Much of this information consisted of visual proof that the Gulf was safe and clean. One image, for instance, is a pier sprawling from the Gulf to the beach at Grand Isle, Louisiana. There is a sunset in the background, which is so bright it nearly blinds the viewer if she looks directly at it. The sun spreads across the horizon, turning the sky slightly pink to the far west while meeting different shades of blue above. There are no people; only the sky, the sun, the pier, and the clean waters beneath the dock. The picture has impressive symmetrical lines. The landscape in the background takes a straight horizontal line from right to left while the pier forms a vertical line toward the setting sun. The water beneath the pier, which is in the midst of a soft, rolling tide, compliments all of this. The water gives the picture texture. Its layered tides are slightly wrinkled to the effect that it creates rippled, shadowed reflections of the sun upon the water that cut across the pier. The sun also makes visible collections of white foam near the beach, which illustrates healthy waters. The sun is bp and it illuminates a brighter future for the Gulf. The image is moderated with a technical statement: "Environmental Recovery: Five years' worth of scientific data collected after the Deepwater Horizon accident show that the Gulf environment is returning to its baseline conditions."
