Show 224 of Salt Lake City's relations between country and city. In fact, the structures of feeling that Raymie Williams talked about are no longer discernable between country and city since country, city, and corporation are all part of the same hybridized network. Regardless, the case of Rio Tinto is one example of how corporations attain subjectivity within communities. Indeed, Salt Lake City is unique because it has both hinterland and cityscape within the same valley; nonetheless, like other communities that do not have open-pit copper mines in their backyard, it still gives readers a sense for how corporations establish subjectivity within local communities. Corporations, once more, are like people because they are citizen-subjects. But they remain different. Always different. These differences were quite evident in our case study. At the NHMU, Rio Tinto is an element of natural history and a supporter of science and technology. And at the Rio Tinto Stadium, Rio Tinto is an entertainer. Rio Tinto is thus a perfect multiplicity that is fragmented, dispersed and always changing. As Deleuze and Guattari (1980/1987) would say, Rio Tinto is a rhizome that cannot be reduced, tamed, or systematized. It is a subject that operates by variation, expansion, conquest, capture, offshoots…The rhizome pertains to a map that must be produced, constructed, a map that is always detachable, connectable, reversible, modifiable, and has multiple entryways and exits and its own lines of flight. It is tracings that must be put on the map, not the opposite. In contrast to centered (even polycentric) systems with hierarchical modes of communication and preestablished paths, the rhizome is an acentered, nonhierarchical, nonsignifiying system without a General and without an organizing memory or central automation, defined solely by a circulation of states. (Deleuze & Guattari, 1980/1987, p. 21) In other words, Rio Tinto is a network. The advantage of understanding Rio Tinto as a rhizome in Salt Lake City is that it is another useful heuristic that can be a starting point |
