Show All of these networks of relations trace back to two foundational teachers and debate coaches who first trained me as a producer of rhetoric and argument: Professor Edward Hinck and Ms. Kathy McCauliff. Ed has dedicated many hours helping me mature my passion for argument with patience and sagacity. I am thankful for his unwavering support and his resolute confidence in my academic potentials. This academic family tree, though, all begins with Kathy McCauliff. Kathy was my first academic mentor, and I am forever grateful for the opportunities that she made available to me, and other debaters at McBain High. She instilled a passion for argumentative exchange and intellectualism in me that remains undiminished. Thanks also to Phil Christensen for believing in my academic potential at a young age. What all of this comes down to is family, which has been my Rock of Gibraltar. My grandparents, my parents, my brothers. These are the people I dedicate this dissertation to, for being my first teachers. Memories of my grandparents, Severin and Hildegard Paliewicz, and Richard and Ruth Fleet, are strong enough to last a lifetime, and I am forever grateful for all that they have done to make the privileges I enjoy today possible. My father, Stephen Paliewicz, has supported my academic efforts in an incalculable number of ways. I am especially appreciative of all the times he reminded me that if we couldn't laugh we would all go insane, as another great man once said. My mother, Lisa Fleet, taught me to think with my heart and to always look for the best qualities in people. My brothers, Cory and Ryan Paliewicz, are forever my best friends. This dissertation would not have been possible without any of you, my dear family, and I want you to know that I am thankful for all of your love and support. xii |
