El 6rden de su narracion es el mismo en los tres autores, y repetidas veces Ia copiaron ala letra. No oculta Duran la procedencia de su obra, que varias veces se refi.ere a Ia cr6nica de que la sac6, auuque sin dar uoticias de ella. Ouauclo la adquil'i, me dedique a su estudio y pude hacer las siguieutes observacioncs. La obra, se compone U.e va,rias estampas geroglfficas, quo aunque copiadas imperfectamente con ];>luma, conservan su primitivo caracter; y estas estampas sirven de base al relato, que por decirlo asi, agrnpa a SH dcrredor las tradiciones hist6ricas. Esto bace comprender que tal trabClJo es una, interpretacion extensa de algun c6dice geroglffioo de los antiguos mcxica,uos. La interpretacion se ha hecho, siguiendo la tradicion puramente mexicana. Por el estudio de las diversas cronicas del siglo XVI que corren impresas, he observado que en lo general siguen las tradiciones acolhuas, 6 han mezchdo estas con las mexicanas; pero ninguna de elias es una relacion genuina de las ideas hist6ricas de la antigua Mexico. Silo es el presente MS., y bajo este aspecto es de un inmenso merito, y la mejor fuente, a,caso la {mica verdaclemmente a,utorizada, para conocer los hechos pa,sados en Tenochtitlan. Toclo haec suponer que fue escrito poco despues de Ia conquista, y en mexicano. Debi6 gozar de gran popularidad, pues desde ent6nces sa,bemos ya que, por lo menos, existian tres traducciones: la una hecha por el jesuita Tobar, que no se sabe si contenia las estampas, la cual sirvi6 al P. Acosta, y di6 causa al error de Olavijero que se la atribuy6 como obra propia a Tobar. Otra copia, 6 tal vez el original, se hallaba sin duda en Santo Domingo y fue la base de la Risto ria del Dominicano Duran. Debi6 ser esta mas cuidadosa, si fue copia, que Ia que yo poseo, pues las estampas del P. Duran tienen colores, y son mayores en numero. Es verdad que estc al copiar los geroglificos, 6 copistas posteriores, los desfiguraron por querer perfeccionar su dibujo, quitandoles asi su caracter especial. La copia que yo poseo, unica que se ha salvado, perteneci6 a los franciscanos. Pues todavfa tenemos presunciones de otra, hecl10 sobre el cual no llam6 la atencion el Sr. Ramirez en su Advertencia. No solamente tuvieron esta relacion por base Duran y Acosta, tuvola tambien Tezozomoc, y sin duda posey6 una cuarta copia. De todas maneras, la historia tfpica del imperio mexicano s6lo se encuentra en Tezozomoc y Duran. Leyendo a estos cronistas, parece que como contemporaneos asis•imos a contemplar aquella sociedad y aquellas 13 hazafias, Y ofmos bablar :1 los mismos tenocbca en su lenguaje brillante Y expresivo. Esas cr6nicas no son mas que la reproduccion de este lVIS. mas extensas si se quiere; pero sin apartarse de el en su estilo, en sus re~ latos, en los sucesos hist6ricos. He aquf por que considero este c6dice como la fuente mas pura y mas importante de la historia de Mexico, y por que le be impuesto el nombre de RAMiREz, como una muestra de gratitud a quien lo conserv6, y que, para que no se pcrdieran las tradiciones genttinas de Tenochtitlan, emprendi6 ademas Ia pnblicacion de ]a obra de Duran. El ejemplar primitivo, que esti en mi poder, forma uu volumen en 4<? comun, de 269 fojas, letra del siglo XVI, muy pequeiia, y renglones muy co~pactos. Dividiclo en dos columnas, solamente est{t cscrita la primera, deJanclo en blanco Ia de h derecha, sin duda para poner el texto mexicano. Su titulo es: Relctcion del O'ttgen de los In£lios que habitan en esta, nueva EspcMilt, segttn sus histot·ins. Tiene 30 laminas clibujadas a tiuta, estando iluminada con col ores solamente Ia relativa al ca1endario. El fragmento relativo ala Oonquista tiene una portada tam bien de tinta. EI Sr. Ramfrez, como ya se Ita dicho, hizo sacar una copia, y sirviendose del texto del P. Duran, llen6 las Iagunas y cnmend6 los errores del texto primitivo. 'ruve Ia, satisfaccion de regalar esta copia al Sr. Orozco Y l~en·a, Y ella sirvi6 para la publicacion que del precioso c6dice Ramirez J1a It echo el Sr. Vigil en su Biblioteca Mcxicana, poniendolo como preambulo de la Or6nica de Tezozomoc. 1 En la noticia qne de el ejcmplar primitivo da el Sr. Orozco, manifiesta que en su concepto es Ia traduccion de 'robar, y que fue el que tuvo a Ia vista Torquemacla. La, circunstancia de haber variacion de frases, aunque equivalentcs, en el relato de Acosta' me hace creer que esta es otra traduccion. Si fue la que tuvo a Ia vista Torquemada, pues esta escrita de su puiio y letr a, cuyo carrtctcr conozco mucho por poseer algunos fragmentos del ~iS. de su Monarquia Indiana. Lo notable es que el ultimo fragmento es de Ia misma Ietra que las apostillas de la primera estampa del P. Duran. ~Acaso estas estampas fueron copiadas directamente del c6dice gerogllfico original que perteneci6 al autor An6nimof Es muy probable, y sin clucla su mismo MS. fue el que sirvi6 a.I cronista dominicano. En la copia de Espaiia y en la del Museo, las estampas estan a la cabeza de los capftulos. Se ve por las anteriores noticias Ia gran importancia de la Risto ria del P. Duran, y el vercladero servicio que el Sr. Ramfrez prest6 comenzando su publicacion.
