Show 946 The distance water would be backed up would depend on the height of the dam . To the best of his knowledge and belief , power is an incidental feature ( 'to to ) the Boulder Dam project . ( R . 3724 . ) He does not know , of his own ( knowledge kiiowledge ) , that it is ( conteni- conteni ) plated that the water behind the Boulder Dam shall never fall more than fifty feet below the top of the dam . Q . Well , as an engineer , would it not appear to you as desirable that only sufficient available ( capac- capac ) ity be left to take care of some emergency flood ? A . Well , in case of Boulder Dam I would like to answer the question Yes or No , but I can not . I think in case of Boulder Dam that there is a ( ques- ques ) tion there of a large ( amount amotint ) of silt that is carried by the Colorado River , and the necessity , in view of the large expenditure that the Government proposes to make there , of reserving space at the reservoir , so that it will not fill up with silt , because undoubtedly the rate of filling will be very rapid . That capacity certainly ought to be sufficient to give you the volume of storage that you require for whatever purposes you are building that dam . Now the main purpose may be irrigation or ( inci- inci ) dental power ; or it may be power , and if it is solely for power , the question will come in as to how that power is to be used . Sometimes the power is ( more niore ) valuable than it is in others . So that you would have to figure ( that tbat ) thing out , having your full head and your full reservoir at the ( time tiine ) your power was worth ( most inost ) . |
