Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Show Went ( upstream upsta-cam upstacam ) to Hite 828 to get mail about once a month ; by boat if river conditions favorable ; other times walked up ; sometimes could sail part way walk balance . ( R . 3180-3181 . ) Towing outside of wind considered easiest ( way 'way way ) of getting up river ; easier than rowing . ( R . 3182 . ) First motor boat tried on river was about 1902 ; built at Hite of ( white -white white ) cedar ; 26 ft . long , 6 ft . beam ; flat bottom ; equipped with automobile ( en- en ) gine ; double cylinder ; tried to use it going up river , never got it any farther than Good Hope Bar , about 14 miles ; could not run up Good Hope rapids with it ; did not have enough power to go over ; ( even- even ) tually sprocket chain broke , it went ( into hito ) river and he lost it . . Good Hope rapids are ( 18 -18 ) miles below Hite ; tried both stern and side wheels on boat . ( R . ( UK--- UK ) 3183 . ) Side wheel , on account of swift water one side caught on rocks , other side out in swift water ; could not hold boat ; one side outrun the other . ( R . 3183-3184 . ) He next operated a motor boat in 1905 or 1906 ; propellor boat bought from Mr . ( Tokey Yokey ) at ( Green- Green ) river ; hauled overland by way of ( Hanksville Hanhsville ) ; ( down do-wn down ) North Wash to Colorado River ; used to run up and down river ; supplies ( would -would would ) be brought to Hite and run boat from ( Olympia Olynipia ) bar up to Good Hope bar and load with supplies ( R . 3143-3185 ) ; went to Hite by towing boat . ( R . 3185 . ) Boat was 22 ft . . long and 4 ft . wide ; it ( had bad ) 12 H . P . . ( engine engiine ) in it , , |
