Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

[ ( The Tile ) map shows ( ono olie ) ( hundroel hitudrad ) . eighteen miles . ] They had to help the boat up with oars and at one ( point poilit ) somebody got out and had to tow . This ( vas was ) at Bridge Canyon , and was the only place in the whole distance up the river . He did not keep any particular account of the hours a day they would run , as they had ( twenty t-wenty twenty ) days to make it in . ( R . 4815-4816 . ) They were ahead of time and did not hurry but he would ( be- be ) ( lieve heve ) they traveled five or eight hours a day and he would suppose it was a little less than two miles an hour . He ( was -was was ) putting in the time on the trip usually waiting for Freeman and Bill Jones and they went faster after Freeman and Jones were ahead . He ( couldn't couldnt ) say how many days they put in waiting for Freeman and Jones but they put in a good many hours . He did not put in very many days ( waiting -waiting waiting ) because he believes the second or third day ( fhe he ) began to push ( Freeman's Freemans ) boat . ( ( E R ) . 4817 . ) ' ; It was after the boats were put together that they had the trouble at the one rapid at Bridge Canyon . They ( didn't didnt ) run into a ledge of rock in Lake Canyon ; they saw it but did not ground there at all , as he knew the way through . He was never in the water at Lake Canyon and he ( hasn't hasnt ) any information as to the depth of the water there , but in low water the ledge is pretty close with just one ( land kind ) of ( cut-out cutout ) place in the end |
