Description |
Testimony given before special master Charles Warren in a suit brought by the United States against the state of Utah over ownership of the bed of the Colorado River. Much of the testimony was given by river runners, scientists and engineers, petroleum geologists, and placer miners. The testimony constitutes an extensive oral history of the men and women who utilized the Colorado River Basin in Utah prior to 1929. |

Bennett was there at the time of these operations or not but Mr . Chaffin was there operating below [ Good Hope Bar ] . ( R . 5139 . ) He worked in and out of there for a long time , ( taking -taking taking ) Robert ( Stanton's Stantons ) equipment and supplies in , as ( he lie ) recalls , in 1899 . He entered the river on that ( trip 'trip trip ) at Dandy Crossing . The last time he ( remem remem- remem ) ¬ bers seeing the drill was just above Cape Horn or between Cape Horn and the mouth of Four Mile Canyon . The drill machinery and supplies were taken down the river on a large barge . It stopped from time to time and drilled a number of holes . He would judge there were ten tons of equipment and supplies on the barge . ( R . 5140-5141 . ) [ Four Mile ( Creek -Creek Creek ) is at mile 158 , about five or six miles below Dandy Crossing or three miles below Trachyte . ] He ( didn't didnt ) do anything with the handling of , the boats during the period spoken of , just got on and off them . . and looked them over . About 1900 he delivered a dredge and some other , equipment for Mr . Stanton , as he remembers , just below Hanson Creek . The dredge was estimated to ( weigh -weigh weigh ) one hundred and eighty tons and he ( doesn't doesnt ) . remember the tonnage of supplies and other ( equip equip- equip ) ¬ ( ment inent ) taken down .
